Top 9 tips to help tired moms wake up early
After looking at the title you’re probably thinking
I’am already exhausted and you’re asking me to get up early?
Yes I know waking up early is great, but I can’t do it, there is just no way.
Im not a morning person.
My husband gets home late so there is no way to follow “ Early to bed and early to rise”
I know I know! I have been there too. But hear me out. You might change your mind.
There is a whole post on why I started waking up early and what are the benefits of it.
So lets jump right into the tips that are definitely going to help you wake up early even when you don’t feel like it..
1.Write your to do list the previous night.
Sometimes you lie on the bed tossing and turning because there are all these thoughts floating in your mind about the things that you need to get done. The best thing to do is to write it out on a piece of paper.
This has two benefits. One, it will help clear your mind enough to go to sleep peacefully. Two, it will motivate you to get up early because you’re excited to get some of these done.
2. Always put your kids to sleep first
Never try to put your kids to sleep the same time as you are going to sleep. They need much more sleep than you do and only after the kids are asleep, will you have time to go through your night time routine in peace.
3.Have a good night time routine
Come up with a few things to do every night to unwind. After you put your kids to sleep you can take a warm shower, do your night time skin care, paint your nails, read a book etc. By doing this daily, your brain will learn to relax and unwind while you go through your routine. This will help you fall asleep much more easily.
4.Try to go to bed earlier
This is a no brainer, but is also what people struggle with most. I used to struggle with going to bed early. Phone and laptop being the main culprits. Make it a point to go to bed at a decent time which allows you 6 hours of sleep. So going to bed between 10 to 11 would be ideal.
Make sure you stop using your phone an hour before you go to bed because the white light from the screen will not allow your brain to shut down and let you fall asleep.
5.Set your alarm 15 mins before you actually want to wake up and keep it out of reach
If you are like me, once your alarm goes off you instantly get into a heated debate with yourself. I can suddenly come up with hundred reasons to not wake up, but there is also a tiny part of me that says I should. Though I’m half asleep and disoriented, I make up some pretty good points to not wake up. But I think of things I want to accomplish today, my goals and purpose and it gives me that little push. Plan ahead to have 15 minutes for all this.
Keep your alarm clock at a place where you will have to get up from your bed and walk to switch it off. For example above the cupboard, right outside the bedroom, on your husband’s bed side table etc
6.Smile and jump
The first thing you do when you wake up should be “smiling”. It might feel silly but try it. Just get up and smile for no reason. This will instantly put you in a good mood. When you get out of bed, jump and get off. This will really wake you up.
7.Make your bed
Once you have smiled and jumped off the bed, make your bed. It’s very easy to crawl back to sleep when you see a warm inviting bed. So as soon as you wake up, make your bed, it’s also one less thing to do during the day. Plus, it gives you that satisfaction that you already accomplished one thing,
8.Come up with a fun morning routine that you can look forward to.
Make sure you morning routine involves a physical activity that is fun. Try aerobics or zumba instead of your normal exercise routine or go for a run or walk. You’re going to love it. Make that yummy coffee just the way you like it. Try to create something. like a craft project, sewing, writing poems etc.
9.Be accountable to someone
Another thing you can try is to have an early rising buddy. Whoever gets up first can call the other person and speak for 5 to 10 minutes. This way you can motivate each other.
It is normal to feel tired during the day for the first few days that you wake up early. You could try to take a nap for 20 to 30 minutes during the day .But like any other habit, especially the good ones, it is difficult in the beginning but if you’re consistent it will get easier. You will definitely see amazing changes in your life.
Waking up early has been a real game changer for me. If 5AM sounds like too much for you. Try and get up 15 mins earlier than the time you get up now and see the difference it can make to your day.
Once you accomplish it try setting the alarm, a little earlier than that and keep doing this until you have reached a comfortable time.
